"A doctor asked me for my address in English.
"Karen Smetacek, Hansastraße 72, Kiel, Telephone 8011..." I said in German and
shuddered. Not another word came from my lips. ... I felt panic but I could console myself
"I cannot speak because I am suffering from shock after the accident...."
Karen is wheeled into a room, Victor appears a few hours later, and she suddenly
notices that she can again speak normally. She is relieved. But there is something
strange. She cannot roll the Spanish "R". She used to do it perfectly. Karen
senses that something is wrong.
A few days later the Smetaceks are flown to Kiel in an ambulance airplane. They are
admitted to the University hospital: Victor in the orthodontic and Karen in the
traumatology unit. It is April 1981.
